Well it is hard to believe it has been 5 months since we took over Cottier Estate. The fact that Harvest occurred days after we took over meant we were immersed in the vineyard from day one. Luckily Peter and Yvonne had assisted us in the previous months so that the handover was smooth. Harvest was exciting, a long hot dry summer meant that the fruit was in excellent condition and the yields were also good. With the help of family and local contractors harvest was completed with only minor difficulties, the tractor suffered minor damage, my father in-law has been driving them for over 50 years but not down narrow rows!
So the quiet time of the year came upon us and minor maintenance and repairs have been done, fencing is underway to keep the sheep off the garden and we now have an up to date weather station set up. Combine this with marketing and events as well as the new web site we have not had very much down time.
In the last few weeks the pruning and mulching has been completed and we await frost fighting season with maintained wind machines at the ready.
The seasonality of Dakins Road has been wonderful with the weather changing and giving us some welcome rain. There is something about the ebb and flow of nature as it cares for the plants and lets them rest over winter that makes you feel grounded and a part of something much bigger than any individual. We look forward to having a full year here so we can experience the full array of seasons.
We are close to bottling our limited quantity of Rose which will be ready for summer, initial tasting has been exciting.
Although not open for tastings, we do sell from our cellar door so if you want to visit and buy some wine at cellar door prices please contact us, the weekends are best.
